Harvest Greetings from New Glarus Home

What a beautiful autumn season we have had thus far. The color of the leaves is stunning as I travel to and from New Glarus Home each day. William Cullen Bryant said autumn is the year’s last, loveliest smile, and the hills surrounding New Glarus confirm that thought.

The month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness and Crime Prevention Month. On New Glarus Home’s Facebook and Twitter pages, we have shared information about early detection and tips for your personal safety. This important information is geared towards everyone, but especially our residents, employees, and the entire New Glarus community.

This September, New Glarus Home officially opened The Chalet at Glarner Village. We celebrated with over 150 guests touring The Chalet, meeting the Care Team, and learning about the Wellness component of this new program. The Chalet offers an opportunity to receive care and services in our new state-of-the-art Rehabilitation and Wellness Center.

The Chalet offers inpatient and outpatient therapy services for the entire New Glarus community. We provide private rooms, a customized dining experience, and quality care for those we serve. Additionally, The Chalet has created a unique space in our therapy gym called the “ADL” space. ADL stands for Activities of Daily Living. In this space, therapy patients work on their ability to be independent in an environment much like their own home. Patients learn to prepare food in the kitchen, get in and out of bed, bathe and perform personal care, and do laundry. The ADL space is a critical component to a successful return home for our patients.

The Chalet Wellness Center offers personal training and a variety of classes geared toward older adults in the community. Personal training is a fun and engaging way to exercise. Our certified trainer , Sam Zumdahl, will take you through a variety of exercises that are customized to meet your goals.

Benefits of working with Sam include:

  • Improving your strength, flexibility, endurance, and balance

  • Maintaining or improving your level of independence

  • Transitioning from physical therapy back into daily activities

  • Learning proper form to safely exercise

The Chalet Wellness Center classes include Cardio Comb, Stability and Strength, Yoga, and Sit and Be Fit. The Senior Fitness Test is also offered by the Wellness Center and is an evidence-based program that will help you determine your strengths and discover what you could improve upon.

The Chalet Wellness Center offers community memberships, which include unlimited group exercise classes, unlimited usage of fitness equipment, free fitness orientations, free fitness assessments, fun fitness programs, and educational events.

Joining New Glarus Home in September, Sam Zumdahl, brings a high level of expertise to the Chalet Wellness Center. Sam has worked with people from 12 to 97 years of age, and is educated on effective approaches to health and fitness. Sam says, “I have experience working with patients having cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, as well as, those with joint replacements, are in need of rehabilitation after a stroke, have back pain, arthritis, or want to lose weight. I enjoy working with people to improve their overall fitness. I am very excited to be here and to help all of you reach your fitness goals!”

If you would like to tour or make an appointment with Sam, please call her at (608) 636-2445 or email at: samanthazumdahl@nghome.org.

Wishing you a beautiful harvest season.

Most Sincerely,

Erin Francois
